Licensed Guides and Private Tours in Lille: Vieux-Lille, the Belfry and Day Trips in the Nord

Private walks, museum visits and full days with a guide who holds the French carte professionnelle de guide-conférencier

Lille is the préfecture of the Nord department, and Eurostar trains from London arrive at its Lille Europe station. On this page you contact an independent licensed guide directly for a private walking tour of Vieux-Lille, a visit to the Palais des Beaux-Arts, or a day trip within the Nord to Roubaix, Croix or Dunkirk. Guide prices are set per group, not per person, and are listed in euros with a sterling reference in the price table.

OfficialGuides lists independent tour guides. In Lille the qualification that matters is the carte professionnelle de guide-conférencier, defined in the Code du tourisme, article L221-1. You write to the guide, agree the route, the time and the meeting point with them, and the tour is run by that guide in person.

Half-day tours in Lille cost 240–360 € per group and full days 490–650 €; museum and monument tickets are paid separately. Are you a licensed guide-conférencier working in Lille or the Nord? List your tours on OfficialGuides.

What “licensed guide” means in Lille

A licensed guide in France holds the carte professionnelle de guide-conférencier, the qualification defined in the Code du tourisme (article L221-1 and following). The law ties it to commented visits inside museums with the “musée de France” label and inside listed historic monuments (monuments historiques) open to the public, and places the obligation on whoever organises or sells such a visit.

This matters for planning. Several of the places on a typical Lille itinerary are listed historic monuments: the Vieille Bourse on the Grand’Place was listed in 1921, the Palais des Beaux-Arts building in 1975, and the Villa Cavrois in Croix in 1990. When a commented visit of such a building is organised or sold, the law calls for a holder of the carte.

The English-language market for Lille shows this difference in practice. On the international marketplaces that rank for “Lille private tours”, at least one Lille listing states in its own description that the host is not a licensed guide and will not guide inside the museums. That is a fair statement from the host, and it is also the reason to ask any guide, before booking, whether the plan includes time inside the Palais des Beaux-Arts or the Villa Cavrois.

HALF-DAY · 3 HOURS · WALKING

Grand’Place and Vieux-Lille

The walk starts on the Grand’Place and enters the Vieille Bourse, the former exchange built in 1652–1653 as 24 identical houses around an arcaded courtyard. On the place du Théâtre next to it rises the 76-metre belfry of the Chamber of Commerce. The route continues into Vieux-Lille and reaches the Hospice Comtesse, a hospital founded in 1237 by Jeanne, Countess of Flanders. The Palais Rihour, a 15th-century building that now houses the Lille tourist office, is a convenient start or finish point.

Palais des Beaux-Arts and the Hôtel de Ville belfry

The Palais des Beaux-Arts on place de la République opened in its present building in 1892. Its galleries hold paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya and Delacroix, a set of 40 drawings by Raphael, and the relief maps of around fifteen fortified towns of Flanders built under Vauban. From the museum the group takes metro line 2 to Mairie de Lille for the 104-metre belfry of the Hôtel de Ville, built between 1924 and 1932 by Émile Dubuisson and inscribed by UNESCO among the belfries of Belgium and France. The belfry has a lift, and the average visit lasts about 40 minutes. Inside the Hôtel de Ville, a fresco by the Icelandic artist Erró tells the history of the city in comic-strip form.

Day trips from Lille within the Nord

The day trips on this page stay inside the Nord department, of which Lille is the préfecture. Roubaix and Croix are part of the Lille metropolitan area and can be combined in a half day; Dunkirk on the North Sea coast takes a full day.

HALF-DAY · 4 HOURS · METRO + TRAM

Roubaix and Croix: La Piscine and the Villa Cavrois

La Piscine in Roubaix is a museum of art and industry inside a municipal swimming pool built by Albert Baert between 1927 and 1932. Metro line 2 stops at Gare Jean Lebas, a short walk away. The tram towards Roubaix stops at Villa Cavrois, ten minutes on foot from the house. The Villa Cavrois was designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens between 1929 and 1932 for the textile industrialist Paul Cavrois and is now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux. It has been a listed historic monument since 1990, so the L221-1 rule on commented visits applies there.

Lille in one day

The morning covers the Grand’Place, the Vieille Bourse and Vieux-Lille; after lunch the group visits the Palais des Beaux-Arts and goes up the Hôtel de Ville belfry. Time permitting, the day ends in the park of about 110 hectares around Vauban’s Citadelle. This programme suits visitors who have one full day between Eurostar trains.

Dunkirk: the 1940 evacuation

Dunkirk is the main Second World War destination inside the Nord. The Musée Dunkerque 1940 – Opération Dynamo is housed in Bastion 32. Its collection of archives, maps, vehicles and objects found locally covers the Battle of Dunkirk, the evacuation of British and French troops to England, and the liberation of the town by Czechoslovak forces on 9 May 1945. The admission rate is set by the museum and is paid on site.

Transport for day trips is not included in the guide’s price. The guide can travel with you by train or tram, or you can arrange a car; agree the method when you write to the guide.

Languages

English-speaking tours are the default for every programme above. Each guide lists the languages they work in. If your group needs a specific language, say so in your first message so the guide can confirm before you book.

Guide and driver

Most Lille tours are on foot, with metro or tram for longer distances. For a day in Dunkirk, or for a group with limited mobility, a car with a driver can carry the group while the guide comments. The guide’s fee and the cost of the vehicle are separate; discuss whether the guide can recommend a driver when you plan the day. The Hôtel de Ville belfry is not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, which a guide will take into account when planning.

Getting to Lille and around

Lille has two main stations a short walk apart. Lille Europe receives Eurostar trains from London and high-speed TGV services; Lille Flandres handles regional TER trains and other TGV services. A meeting point at either station or on the Grand’Place can be agreed with the guide.

In the city, metro line 2 serves Mairie de Lille for the belfry and continues to Gare Jean Lebas in Roubaix for La Piscine. The tram towards Roubaix stops at Villa Cavrois. If you are travelling on from Lille to Paris, the private tours and day trips in Paris page covers guides in the capital.

When to plan your visit

Opening days differ between sites, so the weekday decides the route. A Monday morning suits an outdoor walk in Vieux-Lille, because none of the sites below is open then, and a Tuesday suits Roubaix and Croix, when the Palais des Beaux-Arts is closed.

SiteOpenClosed
Palais des Beaux-ArtsMonday 14:00–18:00; Wednesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00Tuesday; 1 January, 1 May, 14 July, 1 November, 25 December
Hôtel de Ville belfryTuesday–Sunday 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–17:30Monday; Braderie weekend
Villa CavroisTuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00Monday
La PiscineTuesday–Thursday 11:00–18:00; Friday 11:00–20:00; weekend 13:00–18:00Monday

La Piscine stays open until 20:00 on Fridays, which makes central Lille in the morning and Roubaix in the afternoon possible on the same day. The belfry closes between 13:00 and 14:00; the 10:00–11:00 slot is sold only online or at the tourist office in the Palais Rihour, and the reduced 7.50 € rate applies to online bookings.

The Braderie de Lille, the large street market held on the first weekend of September, fills the centre; the belfry is closed during it. On the first Sunday of the month, the permanent collections of La Piscine are free, and from November to March the Villa Cavrois is also free on the first Sunday, which brings more visitors to both.

Extended and tailored days

A full day with one guide is the most flexible format: the guide can combine the old town, a museum and Roubaix or Croix, and plan lunch and rest stops around the group. For groups who prefer not to use public transport, a car with driver can be arranged for the whole day. Requests for a specific theme, such as Vauban’s fortifications or Art Deco architecture in the metropolis, are best described in the first message so the guide can prepare.

Entry requirements

Entry conditions for France depend on your nationality. Check the official French visa portal, france-visas.gouv.fr, before you travel.
