Bandar Seri Begawan is small, calm and easy to misread. A private guide turns its quiet streets, gilded mosques and stilt-house neighborhoods into a story you actually follow. The guides listed on OfficialGuides are licensed by the Brunei Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, drive their own vehicles, and tailor every itinerary to your pace, dress code and dietary needs.

Your Licensed Guides in Brunei

Why hire a licensed guide in Brunei
Brunei is a Malay Islamic Monarchy and many sites — the royal mosques, Istana grounds, the Regalia Museum — carry rules that are easy to miss: shoulders covered, shoes off, no photography in specific halls, prayer-time closures. A licensed guide briefs you before each stop and provides the modest robes when required.
Licensing in Brunei is issued after written and practical exams covering history, Islam, protocol and first aid. Each badge has a unique BN-prefix number you can ask to see. Hiring outside this system usually means an unregistered driver who can take you between landmarks but cannot legally narrate, cannot enter restricted zones with you, and cannot help if a venue refuses entry.
Sample private tour itineraries
🏛️ Bandar Highlights & Kampong Ayer — Half Day (4 hours)
A compact loop through the capital. Start at the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque for the lagoon view and a short briefing on Brunei’s state religion. Continue to the Royal Regalia Museum for the Sultan’s coronation chariot and gifts of state, then cross to Kampong Ayer — the 600-year-old water village — by traditional speedboat. Tea and local cakes inside a stilt house, then back to your hotel or the cruise terminal.
〰️ Bandar, River & Proboscis Monkey Safari — Full Day (7–8 hours)
The half-day above, plus an afternoon mangrove cruise on the Brunei River. Your guide and a licensed boatman take you into the side channels at the hour proboscis monkeys descend to feed. Sightings often include monitor lizards, kingfishers and, with luck, a saltwater crocodile. Lunch is at a local kedai kopi with ambuyat or grilled river fish.
🌲 Ulu Temburong National Park — Day Trip from Bandar
An early start by speedboat through the Brunei Bay to Bangar, then longboat upriver into primary rainforest. The day centers on the canopy walkway at 60 meters above the forest floor and a swim in a clear jungle stream. Permits, park fees and lunch are arranged by your guide.
⚓ Cruise Shore Excursion — Muara Port
Designed for ships docking at Muara. Your guide meets you dockside with a name sign, covers Kampong Ayer, both royal mosques, the Regalia Museum and a photo stop at the Sultan’s palace gates, then returns you to the ship at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. Timing is the priority — itineraries shorten automatically if your tender is late.

Practical tips before your tour
Dress code. For mosque visits, women need shoulders, knees and hair covered; men need long trousers. Robes are provided free at both royal mosques but your guide will bring spares.
Currency. The Brunei dollar is pegged 1:1 with the Singapore dollar; SGD notes are accepted everywhere. ATMs are common in the city, scarce in Temburong.
Friday closures. Mosques close to non-Muslim visitors on Fridays, and many shops shut between 12:00 and 14:00 for prayers. Build your itinerary around this with your guide.
Alcohol. Brunei is dry. Non-Muslim visitors may import a small allowance for personal consumption only — your guide will explain current limits at the airport.

Frequently asked questions
Are tour guides in Brunei officially licensed?
Yes. Tour guides in Brunei are licensed by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism after passing written and practical exams. Every licensed guide carries a numbered badge with a BN prefix, which you can ask to see at the start of your tour.
What languages do private guides in Bandar Seri Begawan speak?
Malay and English are standard. Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and Arabic-speaking guides are available on request but should be booked at least two weeks in advance, as the pool is small.
Can I visit Ulu Temburong as a day trip from Bandar Seri Begawan?
Yes. A full day trip is standard: speedboat to Bangar at sunrise, longboat to the park, canopy walkway, jungle swim, and return to the capital by early evening. Permits and a national-park ranger are arranged by your guide.
Do I need to tip my guide?
Tipping is not customary in Brunei and is never expected. If you would like to thank your guide for an exceptional day, 5–10% of the guide fee is more than generous.
How far in advance should I book?
For cruise shore excursions, three to four weeks. For independent travelers, one week is usually enough outside Ramadan and the Hari Raya holidays, when the licensed-guide pool is reduced.
